Carolyn Malon Sober

Shenandoah Valley, Virginia artist Carolyn (Cary) Sober has been painting for over twenty-five years. She studied art at Maryland College of Art & Design, Silver Spring, Maryland; Montgomery College, Takoma Park, Maryland; Catholic University, Washington, D.C.; and University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1990, with a major in Studio Art.

Cary says she is charmed by Virginia's beautiful Shenandoah Valley, and loves being surrounded by the wonderful old mountains, but inspiration for her paintings continues to come from her need to create the as yet unseen. Her artistic energy remains devoted to non-representational imagery, and the ever-exciting exploration of color.

Cary is a member of The Art Group, Mt. Artist Statement

"I love the beauty of the Shenandoah Valley, and being surrounded by the wonderful old mountains, yet inspiration for my paintings comes from my need to create the as yet unseen. My artistic energy remains devoted to that pursuit, and the ever-exciting exploration of color.

"With each new painting I strive for new ideas, which usually come during the process of creating the work. Sometimes I begin by filling the canvas with color and seeing what shapes appear from my brushstrokes. Other times I start by drawing random lines. I try to let my senses decide in what direction to take the painting.

"If I can evoke an emotional response from the viewer, and create a sense of mystery that provokes a closer look, I feel I have achieved success."
